470888cda41e8a072191fa0f46e237be Alyson Stoner & Mitchel Musso: PaleyFest Pair

Alyson Stoner and Mitchel Musso attend the PaleyFest Family 2011 held at Paley Center for Media on Saturday morning (August 13) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The two joined their Phineas & Ferb cast mates to discuss the hit animated series.

The weekend-long festival also featured special screenings, autograph signings, and a variety of interactive elements for kids and families.

Creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh recently chatted with EW about the music featured in the show, “We’re frustrated musicians from way back. We wrote a song for the second episode. We were a little worried about what the executives would think of the song and stuff. We pitched it to them with a demo of the song, and the one note was, Can we hear the song again? Then they said, ‘Can you write a song for every episode?’ We were like, ‘Yes, yes we can.’ We’ve written like 260 songs for the show now.”

Have you been missing Demi Lovato from the stage? Well, don’t fear! The 18-year-old musician will be performing at the 2011 Do Something Awards next month! Nominated for Do Something Charity Song and Do Something TV Star categories, this will also mark the first time Demi will perform her new hit song, “Skyscraper.”

If you are expecting anything less than ‘wow,’ you’ve got the wrong award show. We are so psyched to have Demi’s first public performance, a hot break-out band like Foster the People, and expect OneRepublic with B.o.B to be very loud!” said Nancy Lublin, CEO and Chief Old Person of DoSomething.org.

Hosted by Glee star Jane Lynch, the 2011 Do Something Awards will honor and celebrate the nation’s best young world-changers who represent the pivotal “do-ers” in their field, cause or issue as well as celebs who inspire young people. The awards will air Thursday, August 18 @ 9PM ET/PT on VH1.

ARE YOU EXCITED to see Demi perform?

Demi Lovato released her brand new song, “Skyscraper,” which has jump-started her comeback. The soaring ballad about standing strong in the face of emotional turmoil quickly shot to the top of the iTunes charts, making it the biggest hit of Demi Lovato‘s young career. Fans instantly connected to the powerful track and homemade covers of the song began flooding YouTube. We spoke to Demi late on Tuesday night about the creative evolution of “Skyscraper,” shooting the tear-strewn video with director Mark Pellington, and her dismay with the ubiquity of alcohol references currently in the Billboard Top Ten.

VH1: What can you tell us about the time when the song sort of first made its way to you, and what was it that originally drew you to the song “Skyscraper”?

Demi Lovato: I recorded it a year ago, and when I first heard it I was blown away. I was emotionally attached to the song and I really related to it, like a lot of other people. Like a lot of my fans. I think that’s kind of the beauty of the song, that it’s really relatable, but for me when I first recorded it, it was kind of a cry for help. It was before I went to treatment, before everything had kind of hit the fan. I went to treatment and I came out, then I tried to rerecord “Skyscraper” because my voice had changed and it just wasn’t the same. There was something in that first try, that first run through of the song that was kind of magical. It was so much emotion in it, and to this day, it’s still really special to me. I’ve never been so vulnerable or emotional while recording a song, to the point where I was almost doubled over in tears in the studio. I was crying when I recorded it, I was bawling my eyes out. I don’t know, it just felt really great to open up like that.

I know that you co-wrote the song with Toby Gad, whom you had collaborated with before on your previous records. Can you tell me a little about some of the lyrical contributions that you made to this particular song?

Actually, all I did was perform it. I sang it and poured my heart out into it. Working with Toby was amazing; he wrote the song with a artist named Kerli and she too is just an incredible vocalist, they did an amazing job and I just had the amazing opportunity to record it.

Demi Lovato – Skyscraper – Music Videos

Was it a song that you had to fight for? Did you ever feel like it was going to slip out of your hands?

I never really felt like I would lose the song in any way.

What I mean by that is this. You know, sometimes you hear how demos of songs kind of fly around industry circles, and artists sometimes grapple to see who can record it first. I didn’t know if there was any of that sort of issue when you first recorded the song?

No, Toby was a loyal producer. When he gave me the song, he gave it to me. I was pretty blessed.

The song has been out for just about a week or so now, and as soon as it was released, it went straight to the top of the iTunes charts, which makes it the most successful song of your young career so far. Why do you think that so many people so far are connecting with this particular song at this particular moment, particularly when a lot of the Top 10 songs you hear right now are about celebrating or partying?

It’s kind of unfortunate that pop songs have become so much about partying and about clubs, you know. There’s a time and there’s a place for artist to have some of those songs, and you know I have some of those feel good songs on my records, too. I think people will get sick of hearing about drinking all the time on the radio, because not everybody drinks. I’m not old enough to go to clubs and I have a hard time relating to those songs, so here I come out with a song that’s very emotional and I think that my fans really just cherish that. They’re not old enough to go to clubs, they’re not old enough to drink, and they have a song that they can relate to.

Talk to me a little about the decision that you and your management team made to work with Mark Pellington on this video. Obviously, he directed Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy,” so he’s definitely a expert in associating powerful visuals to emotionally resonant lyrics. What was it about the treatment he presented to you that really spoke to you in the video?

When my manager and my label came to me with video treatments, they sent me one from Mark Pellington. He was is really respected as a director, and he had a great way of really interpreting the song into a video and I was just really thankful that he did such a great job. But he is such an incredible artist and he really knew how to interpret that into a incredible video.

All of the power of the song definitely comes through in the video, and I feel like it’s one of the most emotional videos I’ve seen since Sinéad O’Connors “Nothing Compares 2 U”…

Oh, thank you!

…So, what I mean to ask is, how did you bring yourself to really that raw emotional place again? Was that scary for you being that vulnerable on camera? I mean, it’s one thing to do it in the recording studio but then to do it on camera…

We shot the video in the middle of the desert, basically, and it was pretty easy to get to that emotional place ’cause I was kind of disconnected to the real world anyways. There actually wasn’t very many people there, we actually took private plane there with just the most essential people: the director and hair and make up and management and that was really it. So we didn’t have a large video shoot at all. We really made sure we kept the video shoot really intimate, because it needed to be for the song.

I know its really early to be asking something like this, but I’m wondering if this is the kind of song that you will be singing maybe 10, 15, or 20 years down the road, or do you think that its something that encapsulates a moment in time for you that you would rather not dwell on?

No, I definitely think that it’s the kind of song that I want to still sing for the rest of my life, and if I am blessed enough to have a career that will last 15 or 20 years, I would definitely want to perform this because it represented such a incredible point in my life and career.

Not sure if you’ve been hanging around the internet today or not, but Jordin Sparks released her cover of “Skyscraper” on YouTube today. Have you heard it?

No, but I wanna listen to it, it sounds awesome!

Did she reach out to you to let you know that she’d be doing that, by any chance?

Yeah, Jordin is a buddy of mine and she actually did the background vocals on “Skyscraper.” We wanted to keep those because it adds a lot to the song, I think she may have recorded it once maybe and I don’t really know what the situation was, but I know she did the background vocals and they were lovely so they kept them.

What can we expect for you coming up, do you have a full length that you will be working on anytime soon? What’s next for you over these next couple of weeks and months?

What’s next for me is finishing up the record and getting it out there as fast as we can, I’m gonna be working with a lot of incredible people and I have worked with a lot of incredible people so we are really excited for it to get out there and do our thing, and hopefully release another single soon…I don’t know, we’ll see!

Are there any particular producers or songwriters that you’re working with?

I’m not sure if I can talk about it, but there are some really talented people, I’m really excited.

Do you have any idea in mind in terms of when you would like to get something out, maybe late this year or early next year?

Soon. Soon is all I can say!

In recent days, Demi Lovato’s stirring new single “Skyscraper” has seemingly taken the world by storm (or at least the Internet). And, in what can only be described as “an incredibly refreshing change of pace,” the reason for its sudden surge in popularity has nothing to do with irony, our nascent sense of superiority or kittens (see: every popular YouTube clip in recent history, Rebecca Black’s “Friday”) and everything to do with the simple fact that she sings the hell out of it.

But, in saying that, I’m probably downplaying several other reasons for the song’s ability to cut through the din. Like, for example, everything that’s happened in Lovato’s life leading up to this point or how, because of that, she connects with the song in ways that most didn’t think possible. She reveals new depths with each note, and when she hits that last chorus, and her voice is pushed to the point of breaking, well, if you don’t get goose bumps, then there’s a pretty good chance you’re not alive.

In short, with one song, Demi Lovato has grown up before our very eyes. It’s sort of like we’ve all been handed this shiny new talent, seemingly out of the blue, and we don’t quite know how to react. So it’s fitting that such a career-making single now comes with an appropriately powerful music video, one that is bereft of any and all gimmickry (no elaborate costumes, epic set pieces or dazzling special effects) yet still manages to pack an emotional wallop.

Directed by Mark Pellington (a man who knows a thing or two about making iconic clips), “Skyscraper” is nothing more than Lovato belting out the tune on the barren terrain of the Bonneville Salt Flats. Sure, there’s some dramatically billowing fabrics and some shattered glass, but really, the song is the star. And that simplicity is perfect here, because the song provides all the pyrotechnics necessary.

There is also a moment, right before that knee-buckling final chorus, where Lovato looks directly into the camera and very nearly breaks into tears. I’m not sure if she’s acting or not, but I doubt it, and really, it’s not like it matters. Not when a singer connects to a song on such a visceral level, especially one who’s already been through the wringer. With “Skyscraper,” Lovato has not only proven that she’s capable of remarkable things, but that she’s a survivor too. And, really, there’s nothing more that needs to be said. Not when the song does all the talking for you.

This is the moment at which 18 year old Disney teen pop princess Demi Lovato emerges from personal trauma to step forward as a young adult pop artist. It is no surprise that she would emerge from a stay in rehab and treatment for bipolar disorder with a statement of strength in song. However, it is her choice of collaborators that help make “Skyscraper” truly memorable. It sports the simultaneously fragile but resilient feel of collaborator Kerli’s work while being guided with the surefire mainstream pop hand of veteran Toby Gad. Here Demi Lovato looks serious about being not only a Disney teen idol but also a true pop artist.

Pros

Demi Lovato’s breathy, intimate vocals that evolve into a tower of strength
Riveting, vivid, inspirational lyrics
Sympathetic instrumental track

Cons

No significant negatives here

Guide Review – Demi Lovato – “Skyscraper”

“Skyscraper” opens with the trio of lines, “Skies are crying / I am watching / Catching teardrops in my hands.” Sung with fragile emotion over a pulsing piano by Demi Lovato, this is one of the most riveting openings to a mainstream pop song yet this year. The song maintains a simple structure. It is a song of survival in the face of events that amount to efforts to “tear me down.” However, the audio pictures painted by words like “You can break everything I am / Like I’m made of glass,” coupled with Demi Lovato’s bravura vocal performance turn this into something truly special.

The lyrics of “Skyscraper” bear the unmistakable moody, yet uplifting stamp of Estonian-born songwriter and performer Kerli who co-wrote the song. It is all channeled into memorable mainstream pop territory with the presence of producer and songwriter Toby Gad who is known for such hits as Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy” and Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” The pop music field has been crowded lately with anthems about self-esteem. However, none has been as intimately personal as Demi Lovato sounds here. As she vocally swings for the fences following the bridge, Demi Lovato sounds as if she really does see herself as the towering survivor described in the words.

“Skyscraper” is a complete change of pace from the current dominance of upbeat party tunes on the pop music landscape. Hopefully, this will mean a niche is open for a song like “Skyscraper.” It is deserving of the attention, and “Skyscraper” is one of those pop songs that just might save a life or two as it gives inspiration to listeners beset by equally difficult life circumstances.

Image2 Selena Gomez On New Album: Its Really Empowering

Selena Gomez recently sat down with Billboard.com to chat about her upcoming tour and her new album.

Check out what the 18-year-old actress/singer had to say:

On ‘Who Says’: “It’s a very powerful anthem and it’s something I can relate to and it’s something everybody’s gone through, so I’m glad that song’s out there. Fox heard the song on the radio and thought it was the perfect kind of message for our movie. I’m just glad it happened that way.”

On the feel of the album: “[It's] more positive, which I haven’t really done a lot of. ‘Naturally’ and ‘Who Says,’ which are my biggest songs, are both very positive, but most of my records are kind of intense break-up songs and a little bit repetitive with what I’m singing about…It’s a really empowering record and that’s just more of the place I was in, so I wanted it to be really powerful and to be something that was inspiring.”

On what her tour will hold for fans: “We’re dividing it into four sections. We’re going to have wardrobe changes. There’s going to be dancers — I will not be dancing most of the time. They’ll just be back there getting the crowd pumped up. We’re going to have fun screens in the background. It’s just gonna be a huge party. I wanted to make it like a PG-13 rave.”

Selena Gomez is certainly one in-demand, globe trotting, teenage superstar. The singer and actress has been jet-setting all over the globe balancing dual promotion duties for third album When The Sun Goes Down and new movie Monte Carlo, not to mention finding time to host the MuchMusic Video Awards, hang out with Justin Bieber and perform a special showcase in London to celebrate the launch of Disney Channel HD… We grabbed a few minutes in her hectic schedule for a chat:

What was the vision when recording your new album, When The Sun Goes Down?
“I wanted to age it up a little bit and I really wanted it to be different and fun. It’s kind of a little bit European sounding too with the repetitive fun beats, baselines and things we’ve added. The lyric content is really fun, kind of cheeky and different for me. The imaging and artwork was really fun and I got to experiment with different eras, got to have wigs and wear crazy make-up!”

Like the psychedelic style in the ‘Love You Like A Love Song’ video which is definitely not what we were expecting from you…
“Thank you! That was what we were rooting for!”

Why did you choose to release the empowering ‘Who Says’ as your first single?
“Originally I wasn’t even going to put out a third record because I was finishing Wizards of Waverly Place and going on tour. I wanted to do a single and I heard ‘Who Says’ and loved it and really wanted that song. The reaction it got was really great. It’s really inspiring to me just to sing and then to see how my fans have reacted and the stories I’ve heard has been really amazing. I wanted to make a whole album that made people feel that way. ‘Who Says’ is very inspirational.

Your albums have arrived quite quickly after each other…
“I know! I spent two years on the first one, Kiss and Tell, and a year on the second one, A Year Without Rain, and then, like, two months on this one, When The Sun Goes Down!”

Does that mean you’ll spend a month on the fourth one then?
“No! That is the one where I will start over and definitely take my time with it.”

Britney Spears wrote a song on the record called ‘Whiplash’. Have you met her yet to talk about the track?
“No, I have not met her but I do love her and I think she is awesome. I was very honoured to have a song on the record by her.”

Have you seen the Femme Fatale tour yet?
“I’ve missed it so far because I’ve been promoting. I really wanted to see her concert in Los Angeles – everybody says it was awesome and she’s doing really well. My favourite Britney song is ‘I’m A Slave 4 U’. That is such a fun song.”

You are doing a mash-up of Britney songs on your summer tour; anymore hints about what fans can expect?
“I don’t want to give anything away but I will say that we are starting from her earliest hits to her more recent hits.”

Pixie Lott co-wrote another song on the album and even makes an appearance…
“Yes! I love Pixie very much. She wrote a song called ‘We Own The Night’ with Toby Gad and I’m obsessed with it, I think it’s a beautiful song. Originally I was just going to have the song and not feature her but I love her voice so much. I listen to the original version with her singing it more just because her voice is so beautiful. I wanted to keep some of the ambience she had on the record therefore we featured it.”

Candace Bushnell recently said you’d make a perfect young Charlotte York in Sex and the City. Would you be up for it?
“That was a huge compliment and I was very surprised when I heard that – it was very sweet. But there is nothing official and I’ve never even been approached or anything. My mum is more of a fan because I wasn’t really allowed to watch it when I was younger but I definitely love the series.”

A day doesn’t go by without a picture of you popping up online or in the magazines. How are you handling the increased paparazzi attention?
“It’s weird. I don’t think I’ll ever really get used to you, to be honest. I don’t like that part of my job but it does come with it so I have to deal with it.”

You are in London for the launch of Disney Channel HD and marked the occasion by performing tracks from your new LP; how did it go?
“It was fun. I got to perform two new songs from my new record and also ‘Naturally’. I love my fans and I love doing concerts in small venues. I performed at the Hammersmith Apollo here in London and that was awesome because it was very intimate. I was able to see my fans and interact with them which was great.”

More from our Selena Gomez chat…

On her English accent in Monte Carlo: “It was very weird but fun. I think it came across fine. I love the film and worked really hard on it.”

On whether we’ll ever see her doing a gritty, dark drama: “Eventually I’ll probably do that. I am open to doing a lot of things but probably not at the moment.

On plans for another Wizards of Waverly Place movie: “Not at the moment, no.”

On whether she’ll be bringing her tour to the UK anytime soon: “Hopefully! I would love that, but as of now we haven’t announced any UK dates.”

On what she’ll be doing for her 19th birthday: “I will actually be driving up to northern California to do a concert so I’ll probably just be celebrating with my fans, which is the best way.”

Wizards of Waverly Place star Selena Gomez celebrated the launch of Disney Channel HD with a special showcase in London. Selena Gomez & The Scene’s When The Sun Goes Down is out now.

Until this week, only four acts had ruled the still-young Social 50 chart: Rihanna, the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. But now, we have a new No. 1 artist: Selena Gomez.

And, in an ironic twist, Gomez takes the crown by bumping her boyfriend, Justin Bieber, out of the top slot, and sends him to No. 2.

Gomez skips 5-1 this week thanks to online buzz generated by the release of her third album, “When the Sun Goes Down,” on June 28.

The Social 50 ranks the most active artists on the world’s leading social networking sites — YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and iLike — using a formula blending weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays.

What did it take for Gomez to dethrone the Biebs?

First, all of the promotion leading up to her album’s release, along with the success of its single “Love You Like a Love Song” helped. The latter has already garnered 10 million views on Vevo. In addition, the July 1 premiere of her romantic comedy “Monte Carlo” didn’t hurt either.

There’s also a candid YouTube video — uploaded on June 28 — where Gomez met her longtime crush, “Transformers” star Shia LaBeouf. It has since earned 6.1 million views, respectively (a 146% week-to-week increase). That same day, she also performed another of the new album’s hit singles, “Who Says,” on “Regis and Kelly.” (Also that same day, her “Track-by-Track” video interview with Billboard.com debuted.)

These events, among a dozen others, helped Gomez garner 27,000 new YouTube subscribers; 209,000 Facebook fans and 110,000 Twitter followers.

In other moves, Don Omar leaps 26-11. On Vevo, he saw a 68% week-to-week bump in views, most of went to his latest single “Taboo.” Since debuting on April 12, it has added an impressive 33 million views. This week, “Taboo” is also sits at No. 1 on the Latin Songs chart.

Across his social networks, Omar gained 154,000 Facebook fans and 106,000 Twitter followers.

After re-entering the tally last week at No. 36, thanks in part to an 820% surge in YouTube plays, the Adam Levine-led Maroon 5 has since climbed nine spots to No. 27. The band uploaded a lyric video for its latest single “Moves Like Jagger” on June 13. The song has since accumulated more than 1.6 million YouTube views. The track — which debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week — brings together “The Voice” coaches Levine and Christina Aguilera.

The following week, the pairing also performed the song on the hit NBC TV show. The live debut also found its way to Maroon 5′s official YouTube channel (June 28), but contrary to the lyric video, it rests at a mere 171,000 plays.

Back in the top 10, Michael Jackson (7-3), Lady Gaga (2-4), Shakira (4-5), Katy Perry (3-6), Rihanna (6-7), and Beyoncé (15-9) mix up the order, while Eminem holds at No. 8.

Demi Lovato released the art work for her new single, “Skyscraper,” over the weekend. It marks the beginning of Demi’s musical comeback after she was released from treatment earlier this year. She’s already got a music video in the bag (she tweeted that news recently) and the beachy cover art for the song, to us at least, signifies a more adult step in Demi’s career.

A rep for the singer said more information regarding the track will be coming down the pipeline later this week, but Demi has already given hints as to what the song might sound like. While she looks like she might be leaning toward the adult contemporary country sounds of Shania Twain, Demi certainly isn’t ready for that step in her life. At least that’s what we’re inferring from an interview the singer gave us last year.

Demi’s big voice could be nearly perfect for any style of music, but last summer the singer told MTV News she wanted to try more urban music for her next album, which she had already started at the time. “I’m now just taking that next step and learning how to make my music more radio-friendly but also stay very artistic, and for me that’s R&B,” she said. “I can put my vocal stylings on songs that are R&B and it showcases my vocals more than just singing really loud on a rock song.”

She even had some dream collabos in mind, tossing around Trey “I Invented Sex” Songz and Drake as names she’d like to make appearances on the album. It’s really just a matter of time before her fans actually know what’s in store, but the fact that many former Disney stars to try their hand at pop’n’b (we’re looking at you, Joe Jonas), makes us think it might be the perfect step for her to branch out.
